Do you miss loud, fast, ‘90s-style alt rock as much as I do?
Relive the angst of your early 20s all over again with my new cover of a song by Potty Mouth (pottymouthworld.com, and they're here on Bandcamp, too).
I first saw this band open for one of my musical heroes, Juliana Hatfield, at Slim’s on January 29, 2020. They totally blew me away. I picked up their LP, 'Snafu,' and it’s since become one of my favorite of all time—all killer, no filler.
Potty Mouth brings back punky, ‘90s-style pop rock back in the vein of Juliana Hatfield, the Donnas, Veruca Salt, the Breeders, and Nirvana. They’re like all my favorite, female-fronted bands rolled into one.
I had gotten tickets to their next show in Oakland for March 19, but COVID-19 hit and they had to cancel their West Coast tour. I was bummed, but working on this cover lifted my spirits—and will hopefully lift yours as we wait out this god-forsaken virus.
Check it out and give Potty Mouth’s version a listen as well. Hope you like both!
lyrics
Don't wanna wake up
Don't wanna wake up, 22
I know I won't be any different than I was yesterday
But in an instant all my difference will be taken away
Don't wanna wake up
Don't wanna wake up, 22
Yeah, I can see you roll your eyes and say "You're still really young"
But something's different 'bout this age that they don't tell anyone
Oh 22, I still do what I used to do
Don't you think it's strange that
Number's just an age but it changes you?
What'd you expect?
This year the magic's gone and I'm all that's left
Yeah, you know it's true, there's nothing new about 22
Don't wanna wake up
Don't wanna wake up, 22
Well I could get my act together but it's still just an act
Would you prefer I act mature? Would that get you off my back?
Don't wanna wake up
Don't wanna wake up, 22
I know it's dumb to get hung up on soooo don't get me wrong
But I don't feel like I'll be me if I can't be 21
Oh 22, I still do what I used to do
Don't you think it's strange that
Number's just an age but it changes you?
What'd you expect?
This year the magic's gone and I'm all that's left
Yeah, you know it's true, there's nothing new about 22
When I was younger
Loved every bit of it
No one expected
Anything from a kid
When I was younger, younger, younger
It's just a number, number, number
Wish I was younger, younger, younger
It's just a number, number, number
Oh 22, I still do what I used to do
Don't you think it's strange that
Number's just an age but it changes you?
What'd you expect?
This year the magic's gone and I'm all that's left
Yeah, you know it's true, there's nothing new about 22
About 22, about 22, about 22
Nothing new 'bout 22
About 22, about 22, about 22
Nothing new 'bout 22

Saw these ladies open for Juliana Hatfield and they're my new favorite band. If you like '90s alt-rock like Veruca Salt and the Donnas, these 3 kick it up a notch. Amazing. Richard Turgeon
I've been a fan of J's since the mid-'90s, when "Become What You Are" became one of my favorite LPs ever. I've since met her in person, seen her play 3x, and featured her in my book, 'Indie Rock 101.' Richard Turgeon
