The only reason I even know about this song is because Echosmith followed me on Twitter several months ago (They've since unfollowed me). Despite their apparently immense popularity, I had never heard of them (I don't get out much). Anyway, I checked out a few of their top songs on iTunes and fell in love with this pop gem. I love the songwriting, the production, Sydney’s angelic voice. Everything about it is perfect.
My intention in recording a cover version was not to attempt to duplicate or mimic the sheer artistry and sophistication of the original. As always, I had to find my own way of doing it. I chose to take this in an ‘80s pop direction, influenced mostly by my favorite band of all time, the Police, but also with a bit of The Outfield, Men at Work, Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, and a dash of the Fixx. Maybe a little Foster the People. Basically any band that likes big, chorus-y guitars, sweet drums, and copious amounts of delay and reverb — which will never sound dated to me, for better or for worse.
Anyway I hope you like my cover as much as I love the original. Thank you for listening as always!

lyrics
She sees them walking in a straight line,
That's not really her style
And they all got the same heartbeat
But hers is falling behind
Nothing in this world could
Ever bring them down
Yeah, they're invincible, and she's just in the background
And she says
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
Like the cool kids
He sees them talking with a big smile
But they haven't got a clue
Yeah they're living the good life
Can't see what he’s going through
They're driving fast cars
But they don't know where they're going
In the fast lane, living life without knowing
And he says
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
Like the cool kids
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cause all the cool kids they seem to get it
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
Like the cool kids
And they said
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
Like the cool kids
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
Like the cool kids
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cuz all the cool kids, they seem to get it
I wish that I could be like the cool kids
Like the cool kids
Like the cool kids

Recorded, mixed, mastered, all noises by Richard Turgeon, except tasty bass. That is all Ron Guensche.
Saw these ladies open for Juliana Hatfield and they're my new favorite band. If you like '90s alt-rock like Veruca Salt and the Donnas, these 3 kick it up a notch. Amazing. Richard Turgeon
I've been a fan of J's since the mid-'90s, when "Become What You Are" became one of my favorite LPs ever. I've since met her in person, seen her play 3x, and featured her in my book, 'Indie Rock 101.' Richard Turgeon
