I wrote this recording when I lived in a tiny studio apartment in the Mission District in San Francisco. It was a bad neighborhood, on the corner of 22nd and S. Van Ness, and there were something like 8 gang-related murders that summer.

What was probably the last pay phone in the U.S. sat on that corner—unused by all—and prostitutes would wait there for their "johns" late at night. This was well before the area became gentrified and rents for even tiny spaces like this were still within reach for working stiffs like myself.

It was just me, my dog, my cat, and my music gear. Even though it was small, and the 'hood was somewhat unsafe, I made that place my own little slice of heaven, my own personal paradise. This song is dedicated to that apartment.

I had a dream but I faced the facts

I wanna be an outlaw
but it ain’t easy to pay the bills
I wanna feel secure now
but then I don’t wanna take my pills

I wish the world were friendly
but then I wouldn’t fit in at all
I’d try to start a new life
but there’s no doubt I’d just hit a wall

It’s hard to take the pressure
I never wanted to be a star
Good thing that no one knows me
It takes a lot just to get that far

I think I'll hold off on that smile
I think I'll lay down for a while
I don't have anymore to give or left to say
But I know no one out there's listening anyway
