Our Fair City

about

This song is about the sad state—or downward spiral—of my home city, San Francisco.

I lived and worked in SF for the last 20 years. I lived in the city for 10 years. I've worked in the SOMA and City Hall areas for much of that time.

Since moving here from the east coast, I've watched the city devolve into its current state of squalor, lawlessness, open drug use and dealing, and generally unsafe conditions. I've seen people OD and die in front of my place of business. I've seen users shooting up, dealing, and smoking crack on City Hall lawn and in the surrounding area, every day for years on end. You can't describe having to navigate this scene and the futility and stress you feel in just trying to catch the bus or get safely to work.

I'm going to avoid getting on a soapbox (for now)—and I have a lot of feelings around this—but mostly it's simmering frustration and bewilderment. Contempt for inept city leaders. Compassion for people who on the streets who need a real safety net—not free needles or "safe consumption sites." I express these feelings and firsthand observations in song.

I'll add one thing... I had a recent conversation with a successful person in the film business. They said they didn't like what they were seeing out on the streets but didn't know what to do about it.

I said the first thing we all need to do is speak up. Not accept the status quo, and speak up.

That's what I'm doing here through my music.

Enough is enough. There needs to be real change. Residents, taxpayers, businesses, school kids, functioning adults deserve better than the filth and chaos we're seeing on the streets. I'm tired of seeing too many Californians and friends bail because they've had enough.

Vote OUT the entrenched political status quo. It's time for real change.

Music & lyrics by Richard Turgeon (c) 2022

We treat our people with compassion
Just watch your back when you are visiting alone
Without a home but they’re not homeless
A West Coast paradise that’s everyone’s to own

These city streets are full of bodies
Just step right over them before they fade away

Our fair city
It’s the California Dream
Our fair city
You can just ignore the screams
Our fair city
Step inside the danger zone
Our fair city
Call it hell, I call it home

Just step right up and pick your poison
What doesn’t kill you only makes you want some more
It’s better when you turned a blind eye
Sunshine in squalor ‘cause it’s what we’re fighting for

These city streets are full of bodies
Just step right over them before they fade away

Our fair city
It’s the California Dream
Our fair city
You can just ignore the screams
Our fair city
Step inside the danger zone
Our fair city
Call it hell, I call it home
